Getting Your Customers to Promote Your Business

Online recommendations for all types of businesses may be picking up, but there’s still one form of marketing that’s miles ahead in terms of effectiveness – word of mouth. It doesn’t cost a single dime, yet has more power than any online or print marketing campaign that you spend a bundle for. The simple fact is that getting a recommendation from a friend or colleague has more credibility and people are still more likely to follow through on a personal recommendation than something they found on the Internet. You probably already know this, but do you know how to increase your word of mouth advertising?

Word of Mouth Factors
If your looking for more word of mouth recommendations, asking for them isn’t enough. In a recent study, only 16% of consumers said they would give a recommendation for the sole reason that the business requested them to. What factors mattered more? It might surprise you, but offering an original experience, being friendly, and having cheap prices are not the answers. Respectively, these factors only measured 34%, 45%, and 45%, respectively. The one huge key factor was being reliable and professional, which led to a whopping 65% of consumers saying that they would recommend the business.

Special Offers
At the same time, creating a special offer does lead to more word of mouth recommendations. Everyone likes to get a good deal and a coupon or other special offer promotion led to a 66% likelihood of a recommendation getting passed on. You might think that offering an incentive to the person giving the recommendation might work, but it’s actually much less effective, with a likelihood rating of 35%. True word of moth recommendations must be genuine and essentially paying a customer to spread your brand comes with an air of dishonesty.

The bottom line is that if you want more people spreading your business’s name, you need to be offering a valuable product or service and you must be doing it in a reliable and professional manner. Special deals will help raise your recommendations somewhat, but you should avoid asking directly or trying to pay people to grow your brand for you.
